I’ve been pooled to Newnham

I don’t know what to do!

If you have received an offer from Newnham through the pool and are unsure whether or not to accept, you are not alone! Whilst we cannot tell you what to do – it is entirely your decision – it’s generally best to make big decisions fully informed, so that you know you’ve definitely made the right choice for you.

Have a look through the information above and in our Alternative Prospectus, feel free to come to Newnham so that you can see for yourself what it’s like (you can just turn up – see here) and if you have any queries at all, please contact our JCR Access Officer (jcr.access@newn.cam.ac.uk) – a current student who is here to help you!

It may be helpful to hear from someone who was in your position a few years ago, even just so you know you’re not alone with this dilemma,  so here is what Nicole has to say about making her decision:

“Having been at an all girls’ school I was initially concerned when I was pooled to Newnham, and at one stage I almost didn’t accept the offer. However, I realised that the reason I applied to Cambridge was because I loved the course and the university, and that I shouldn’t turn it down. Now I’m here it’s clear that there was never any need to worry: you will meet men if you want to, and if anything the all girl environment is an advantage!”

I want to know more about Newnham!

Community: Newnham is a medium sized college that’s open to all self-defining women – we therefore have the best of both worlds, as we’re still part of a mixed university yet Newnham benefits by having an extra friendly and inspiring atmosphere. We are the friendliest college and have the most homely atmosphere – whatever your school background, religion, sexuality, ethnicity or country you live in,  we’d love you to come to Newnham and join our diverse community!

Location: We’re situated right opposite the Sidgwick site, where most arts lectures happen, and just 5 minutes cycle away from the main science sites and shops; so we’re near enough to the centre to be convenient, yet not so central that we get swamped by tourists.

Accommodation: Unlike most colleges, everyone lives on site for all years of their course. Our rooms are allocated based on a random ballot system and everyone pays the same price, so we all have a chance to have the nicest room, not just those who can afford to pay more. All rooms have shared kitchens and bathrooms, although quite a few rooms have sinks in too.

Facilities: Newnham has proper kitchens. Yes, you did hear correctly – all have hobs, fridges and microwaves, virtually all have ovens and many have tables in! As well as our wonderful kitchens, we also have a lovely and exceedingly well-stocked library, spacious grounds with a sports field, tennis courts and other facilities on site, pretty gardens and buildings, a buttery, three JCRs (common rooms), four laundry rooms, music practice rooms and an art room. What more could you want?

Grants: Newnham has a lot of very generous bursaries and grants available to make sure that everyone can afford to be here. They range from hardship and means tested grants, to subject based equipment and materials funds, book and travel grants. A full list of the financial support available can be found here.

Amazing alumni: With former students (alumni) such as Emma Thompson, Clare Balding, Anna Watkins, Diane Abbott, Rosalind Franklin (of Crick and Watson fame), Miriam Margolyes (a.k.a. Professor Sprout from Harry Potter), Sylvia Plath and Mary Beard, Newnham is also an inspiring place to study due to its impressive history and the many amazing opportunities available as a result of this.

As we can’t cram all the wonderful things about Newnham into a few paragraphs, please have a look through our Alternative Prospectus.
