College Access


Newnham College JCR are proud to have signed the CUSU Accessibility Pledge and are committed to considering access needs in all of our events.

Peile

1 – Peile JCR-

Level Access- First floor, only accessible via stairs.

Hearing- An Induction Loop System is in use, switch to the T position. Portable hearing loops are also available from the conference office.

Visual- Natural and electric lighting. Stairs are indicated in contrasting materials, and a small uneven surface in the doorway is marked.

General- The JCR located is opposite a set of toilets marked with contrasting signage, and is naturally lit by large windows. It is open for anyone in college to use. There are two types of seating- sofas and wooden chairs.

2 – Jane Harrison Room- 

Level Access- Ground floor room with wide entrance doors. There is flat access from Peile Car Park (on Grange Road). There is a garden ramp to provide access from the other areas of the College. There is no accessible w/c close to this room. 

Hearing- An Induction Loop System is in use, switch to the T position. Portable hearing loops are also available from the conference office.

Visual- access ramp is indicated by contrast markings on the floor. Electric lights and large windows.

General- there is a small cloakroom located between the main corridor and the entrance. Seating for note-takers or carers is dependent upon the size of the event but is usually available. Food and drink are allowed.

3 – Old Labs-

Level Access- Ground floor room. Flat access via the garden paths (hoggin & gravel) from Porters’ Lodge (the Old Labs are not directly linked to the other college buildings and rather set in centre of the gardens). There is flat access to an accessible w/c in the corridor behind this room (which leads to the music practice rooms also).

Hearing- Portable hearing loops are available from the conference office.

Visual- Access is via the gardens, which are poorly lit in the evenings. The gardens contain many obstacles and uneven surfaces which are not indicated by contrast markings. Electric and natural light are used inside the building. There is currently no signage on the building. 

General- the Old labs consist of a small entryway which can be used for those experiencing sensory issues, a main function room, small music practice rooms and toilets. Please ask a porter for assistance if you are unsure how to get to the building.

Clough

4 –  Clough JCR- 

Level Access- First floor, accessible via Clough lift. Level access on the first floor to disabled toilets in Clough next to Lucia Windsor

Hearing- An Induction Loop System is in use, switch to the T position. Portable hearing loops are also available from the conference office.

Visual- signage on contrasting, glare-free finish. Electric lighting and natural light. 

General- The JCR is small so can get quite cramped under conditions of 12 people or more. Seating is available throughout, and toilets are located in the Clough corridor as well as outside Lucia Windsor. Please be aware that the furniture is often repositioned, and in some instances this can make wheelchair access difficult. If this is the case, notify the porters, who will replace the furniture to its original position. No excessive background noise. 

5 – Buttery- 

Level Access- Ground floor area with automatic entrance/exit doors. Flat access via the internal corridor from Porters’ Lodge. Close to an accessible w/c which is located in the corridor opposite the College Hall.

Hearing- An Induction Loop System is in use, switch to the T position. Portable hearing loops are also available from the conference office.

Visual- Glass doors and full-height windows have contrast markings. Natural light and clear entry ways. Large print signage is not currently available, but staff are happy to indicate. 

General- Chairs are positioned in cafeteria-style rows, with some round tables and four sofas at the far end. A water fountain is located next to the doors to the food area. 

6 – College Hall- 

Level Access- Ground floor room with wide entrance doors. Flat access via the internal corridor from Porters’ Lodge. Accessible toilet outside of the room. One small table is accessed via one step, but this is not generally used. 

Hearing- An Induction Loop System is in use, switch to the T position. Portable hearing loops are also available from the conference office.

Visual- the entrance to the hall is slightly uneven and not currently marked. For formals the hall is generally lit by candlelight, which can be quite dim. In the daytime electric lights are used. 

General- For events such as formals, prior notice is required from wheelchair users to accommodate for this in the seating arrangements. The hall is typically used for larger-scale events which can cause excess background noise.  

7 – Lucia Windsor Room- 

Level Access- First floor with wide entrance doors. Access via a lift (there are two separate lifts in different locations to enable access). Flat access via the internal corridor from Porters’ Lodge. An accessible w/c shower room is on the same level with flat access.

Hearing- An Induction Loop System is in use, switch to the T position. Portable hearing loops are also available from the conference office.

Visual- Has various lighting settings which can include low lighting. Signage is reflective but placed upon contrasting material.

General- There is a quiet corridor space outside which can be utilised in the event of sensory issues, and seats are available at all times inside the room. Food and drink are allowed. 

Sidgwick

8 – Library-

Level Access- Accessible via Porters Lodge. Spread across three floors, ground floor, first floor and basement. There is level wheelchair access to the ground floor, and lift access to the basement and first floors. The nearest fully accessible toilets are in the cafe. Partially accessible toilets are on the ground floor.

Hearing- An Induction Loop System is in use, switch to the T position. Portable hearing loops are also available from the conference office.

Visual- Electric lighting, specialist reading equipment such as magnifying glasses and book stands are available from the library office on request. 

General- There is basic seating, a gender neutral toilet, a designated quiet space, and general car parking. There is blue badge parking by request in advance. 

9 – Sidgwick Hall- 

Level Access- Ground floor room. Flat access via the internal corridor from Porters’ Lodge. Close to an accessible w/c.

Hearing- An Induction Loop System is in use, switch to the T position. Portable hearing loops are also available from the conference office.

Visual- electric lighting. 

General- this room is not typically used for student functions.

Dorothy Garrod

10 – Porter’s Lodge- 

Level Access- Ground floor room, flat access via pavement of Sidgwick street. Close to an accessible WC.

Hearing- An Induction Loop System is in use, switch to the T position. Portable hearing loops are also available from the conference office.

Visual- Glass doors and full-height windows have contrast markings. Maps/information are not currently displayed in large print but the Porters are available 24/7 to answer any questions.

General- Seating is comfortable and varied, the lodge can be busy during the day with background noise from the cafe but is generally standard. 

11 – Bar/ Cafe- 

Level Access- Ground floor, accessible via Porters lodge. There is level access from the room to disabled toilets, which are located between the Bar/cafe and porters lodge. 

Hearing- An Induction Loop System is in use, switch to the T position. Portable hearing loops are also available from the conference office. 

Visual- Glass doors and full-height windows have contrast markings. Lighting is generally good, can be turned down for bops etc. Large print menus are not currently available. 

General- The cafe can get quite busy during the day. Toilets are located on both entrances. 

12 – Anna Bateson Room- 

Level Access- Ground floor area with wide entrance doors. Flat access via the internal corridor from Porters’ Lodge. Accessible w/c in the café corridor.

Hearing- An Induction Loop System is in use, switch to the T position. Portable hearing loops are also available from the conference office.

Visual- electric lighting, signage on contrasting glare-free finish.

General- There is a small seating area located outside the room which can be used in the case of sensory issues. Seating for note-takers or carers is dependent upon the size of the event but is usually available. No excessive background noise.

13 – Party Room- 

Level Access- Basement, accessible via Dorothy Garrod lift. Disabled toilets can be accessed on the ground floor via the bar. Please be aware that the party room and w/c are on different floors. 

Hearing- An Induction Loop System is in use, switch to the T position. Portable hearing loops are also available from the conference office.

Visual- stairs are indicated by contrast markings. 

General- Due to small size and basement location this room is potentially triggering for those suffering from claustrophobia. Please be aware that the party room is undergoing renovation, so detailed accessibility notes cannot be currently provided and may be subject to change.

14 – Cynthia Beerbower Room- 

Level Access- Ground floor room with wide entrance doors. Flat access via the internal corridor from Porters’ Lodge. Accessible w/c outside of the room.

Hearing- An Induction Loop System is in use, switch to the T position. Portable hearing loops are also available from the conference office.

Visual- electric lighting, signage on contrasting glare-free finish. Three fire exits are indicated by lit signs. 

General- There is a small seating area located outside the room which can be used in the case of sensory issues. Seating for note-takers or carers is dependent upon the size of the event but is usually available. No excessive background noise.

15 – Admin Corridor (Tutorial Office, Accounts etc)- 

Level Access- Ground floor corridor, flat access via the internal corridor from Porter’s lodge. Entry from Newnham Walk through the door has one step or through the gate is via a gravel path. There is an Accessible WC on the corridor. 

Hearing- An Induction Loop System is in use, switch to the T position. Portable hearing loops are also available from the conference office.

Visual- electric lighting, signage on contrasting glare-free finish. Three fire exits are indicated by lit signs.

General- Seating for note-takers or carers is dependent upon the size of the office but is usually available. No excessive background noise.

Old Hall 

16 – Barbara White Room-

Level Access- Ground floor room. Flat access from Porters’ Lodge, however part of the access is via the garden (hoggin & gravel) as Old Hall (where the meeting is located) is not directly linked to the other college buildings. There is no accessible w/c close to this room. 

Hearing- An Induction Loop System is in use, switch to the T position. Portable hearing loops are also available from the conference office.

Visual- signage is very small but is on a glare-free, contrasting surface. Electric and natural lighting. 

General- this room is located outside of the main college building. Seating for note-takers or carers is dependent upon the size of the event but is usually available. There are three sets of doors leading to the room which all open towards you. No excessive background noise.
