Gender Expression Fund

What is the Gender Expression Fund?

The JCR provides a Gender Expression Fund, currently standing at £150 per academic year, to reimburse students who purchase gender-affirming items to make them more comfortable with their gender presentation. This includes, but is not limited to: binders, packers, concealing underwear, wigs and breast-forms. This fund can also be used to reimburse students for transport taken to Gender Identity Clinics (GICs) during term-time.

Why does this fund exist?

This fund exists to make gender-affirming items accessible to students who may not otherwise have the means to purchase them, especially since many such items are manufactured overseas and have high delivery costs. Newnham is an inclusive and supportive environment, and this fund is in place to ensure that everyone who studies at Newnham is free to explore their gender identity and expression.

How does it work?

The Newnham JCR LGBT+ Officer is mandated to reimburse students on a case-by-case basis, with a recommended maximum spend of £40 per individual per year, subject to increase or decrease depending on individual circumstances and availability of funds.

Your case will be brought to the JCR committee anonymously, and only information that you consent to being shared will be given during the consideration of the application. The minimum information we need to know is the projected cost of your purchase. If your application is successful, you will then be required to provide a receipt of purchase so that you can be reimbursed.

The LGBT+ Officer is mandated to maintain the privacy of applicants to the fund. The receipt of purchase, in the case that reimbursement is given must be made known to the JCR Treasurer, the Senior Treasurer, and the Examiner of the College’s Accounts. However, the full details of the form will only be known to the LGBT+ Officer and Treasurer.

All of the above is reiterated on the application form. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the LGBT+ Officer.
