Welcome to Newnham!

Hello!!! Huge congratulations on getting an offer from Newnham (the best college in my slightly biased opinion!). I know how difficult the last few years have been, so to get through that AND get an offer from Cambridge is an achievement that I hope you’re very proud of. No matter who you are, Newnham is here to welcome you with open arms 🙂

My name is Sophie, I’m in my first year studying French and Spanish, and my role on the Newnham JCR (Junior Combination Room, aka a committee of undergraduate student representatives) is to give you the warmest welcome possible to the college! This wouldn’t be possible without the amazing Freshers’ Committee, as well as Subject Reps and Volunteers, all fellow Newnham students who will soon become friendly faces and points of contact for you. We’re working together to plan an amazing Freshers’ Week for you, and can’t wait to meet you in person!

Before then, I hope this page can be a useful point of reference for you and help ease some of the worries you may have about starting uni. It’s completely normal to find the whole thing quite scary (I was terrified!) but last year’s Freshers’ Committee, Volunteers and Subject Reps did an incredible job at helping my year group settle in, and it’s my year group’s aim to do the same for you! If you have any questions or just want a chat, don’t hesitate to message me on Facebook (Sophie Wrigglesworth – a slightly amusing surname, I know) or email me on jcr.freshers@newn.cam.ac.uk.

Congratulations again, see you soon!

Lots of Newnham love,
Sophie xxx
